Hartley’s Helmet Diving

  /  Hartley’s Helmet Diving

Take a bold step forward and experience the thrill of exploring Bermuda's marine world, even if you can't swim. In shallow water helmet diving, your head stays dry, you can wear your glasses, and there is no mask, regulator or snorkel (beards and mustaches are no problem). In 1947 Bronson Hartley became the first person worldwide to take folks on undersea walks. In Bermuda, his son Greg, and in Nassau, his son Chris, now continue the family tradition of taming and training fish in their natural habitat for your enjoyment. The helmet is lifted onto your shoulders as you are standing on the large padded ladder. After clambering down a few steps you are standing on the sandy bottom 8-10ft down. All seven divers hold a 6ft plastic bar that keeps them all in a close group to see the action. This is a guided tour, a sugar-coated biology lesson. Marine life is passed around and identified by means of written messages. Leroy the snapper will let you hold him while you pose for your photo. If you are fortunate, Charles the hogfish will make an appearance. Diana the angelfish swims though a hoop. Expand your horizons and think outside the box.
